3 min read

Autocad lagging issue is an annoying situation. You would like to work on your drawings with a satisfying performance. However, you may be experiencing this issue even with simple work. So stop fighting with this lagging problem. 🙂 While mostly it is the hardware, you can improve your autocad performance with the right changes. Instead of costly changes like hardware or the computer, you can try the below 6 solutions. I advise you to try each step with patience. Because you will surely experience an improvement in your Autocad performance. Now let’s check the solutions.

Solutions for Autocad Lagging Issue

1- Deactivate Unnecessary Startup Programs

This is a useful way not only for Autocad performance, but also for the computer performance. You can open the Task Manager by pressing the Start or Windows button. You can also do that pressing ctrl+alt+delete.

In the opening window press the Startup tab. So here you can see the programs that your computer runs upon startup. You can see the unnecessary programs at the status column. You can deactivate by right clicking on them and choosing deactivate. You won’t be able to deactivate some necessary windows operations even if you try to do it. So you don’t need to be afraid. 🙂Also, don’t forget to restart your computer to see the changes.

2- Uninstall Unnecessary Software and Cleanup Computer Disk

You can keep only the needed software-programs on your computer. Because Autocad uses the computer memory to operate. High memory capacity would let it work properly. So removing the unnecessary programs will speed up your Autocad performance.

Also disk cleanup would be helpful about this. To do this, type disk cleanup in the search bar. Also you can type it after pressing the windows button. You can go forward choosing the C drive. Then press the clean-up system files button located at the bottom left. It’s that simple. 🙂

3- Hardware Acceleration

This could be the most effective method in this article. You can run hardware acceleration option in Autocad. Because this will help increasing the graphical and general performance of Autocad. For doing this, you can type 3DCONFIG to the command line in Autocad and press enter.

Then you will see the above screen. You can activate it by turning Hardware Acceleration option “on”. At this point, you should keep in mind that your graphics card should support OpenGL. But if it doesn’t support OpenGL, this option will already be passive and “off”.

4- Cleaning Autocad Files / Drawings

The cause of Autocad lagging may be the DXF or DWG files. However cleaning up the Autocad files would solve the problem. While working on Autocad, type “PURGE” at the command line. So the lagging drawing will become less lagging. Besides, you can make it easier opening and working on the file with several methods. Since this topic is a bit long, we will include this in another article on the blog.

5- Set Program Priorities of Your Computer

You can set the program priorities of your computer at the task manager. Its a good way to prioritize Autocad over the less necessary programs. You can open the task manager as the way mentioned in the first item (1). Then click the details tab. Find acad.exe and right click on it. In the opening menu, choose set priority and set to high.

By the way, you need to repeat this after restarting Autocad or Windows. Because it will return to default settings.

6- Keeping the Autocad Updated

t’s a must to keep a software updated for smooth and good performance. So you should make sure that Autocad gets the recent updates and packs. Also, you can reach the latest updates by clicking this link.

Lastly, it would be helpful to set the windows theme to default. Even if it may be hard to give up great looking waterfall views or colourful birds. 🙂 Hopefully your autocad performance will become much better after reading this article. Hoping it will be useful.
